Hi,
I just wondered if anyone knew if there was an official cut off date for the last payment of child maintenance.

Long story short, my youngest has just finished A levels and will be going to Uni in September. I still received Child tax credits and child benefit this month (August) but obviously this will be the last payment.

The ex ( who is still estranged from both children) failed to pay this morning - without warning of course. It’s not a huge amount but we were hoping to buy her a new laptop with it. I knew this would be the last payment. He paid in August for my other child last time.

We aren’t well off (but are happy) and this will now cause a big struggle what with all the other things I need to buy her. So I guess what I’m asking is there any point in trying to pursue it either with him privately or through the CMS ? Do the CMS have a policy on when the last payment should be ? Any advice would be much appreciated.

This is the man who hasn’t seen her in 5 years (his choice) but was posting all over Facebook yesterday how much he loves his kids. I’m really trying not to get wound up because it’s not worth it.

CM payment usually end when CB payments end - unless there is an existing court order that extends the duration of CM payments.

You could write to him and just remind him that this month's cm hasn't been paid, and that this is the last CM payment he is expected to make. Is he paying ia the CMS? If so you could let them know he hasn't paid.

There are a number of laptop manufacturers that give a decent discount for students (ie Dell offer 20% off); its also worth looking at Amazon Warehouse for deals - often an item that is reduced because the box has been opened is unused and still in the wrapping.

Thank you so much for the quick reply rubytuesday.

It’s a private arrangement that was only court ordered for the first year. I emailed him asking politely for the final payment and got ‘Tough luck’ in return. I doubt there’s any point in asking the CMS to make a claim for one month…

I’m not sure why I’m still surprised by him !!
Thank you for the laptop ideas. Still not going to be possible this month but maybe next month.

Would the university she is attending have any bursaries that you could access or apply for based on your income as another potential option to help you out?

Thanks for the reply Rickoshea.
Yes she has already been told she’s eligible for a ‘hardship’ bursary - I’ve got used to the shame of being that family now as my son also receives it !
But unfortunately, like his, it won’t be paid until the 2nd term for some reason….
It’s ok, we’ll manage something, just a tad frustrated he gets away with this last chance to upset us. But it is what it is ?
