I am considering divorce, but should I wait until my child is 18? (currently 17) Father is parent and we are married and all living together. Been together 18 years, only married past 2.5 years. Does anyone have insights into the pros and cons of divorce with a 17 year old child versus 18. From my research it seems better to wait & more straighforward to do a DIY divorce if the child is 18. Child is currently doing A levels (nearly completed first year of A levels) and after that have a year "out" then go to Uni. I don't have any problem waiting, I can use it to plan my single life etc. Child is doing well, fine and happy.

In my opinion it really does not matter as the time it takes to get divorced your child will be 18. What you hav to decide is who the child lives with until they finish their university education because in a way they are dependant on one party more if you are not going to share custody/responsibility. The person with whom the child resides should a better financial outcome and/or some spousal maintenance and possibily the FMH if you don't agree to sell
