Best to get the appropriate consent rather than ignore the law. It maybe rare but there is potential for hassle and spoilt holidays attending a last minute court hearing, being stopped and questioned at ports before leaving the UK or dealing with visits from the authorities when you are on holiday if allegations of child abduction are made. There are also some countries eg Canada and Mexico where written consent is required before they will admit a child travelling with one parent.
