I have found with my elder one (now 17) that quite often these blowups are due to hunger, in the same way that toddlers misbehave when they need to eat. Teenagers, particularly boys, are growing really fast and can''t always wait until the next meal. I used to hand out drinks and biscuits/toast as soon s they got in from school and it helped a lot. And I still have a freely accessible biscuit tin that they can raid whenever they need to - even half an hour before dinner.

Best wishes,
Sadie
