Another argument could be that you managed to finance another property from savings. If these savings were built up over the marriage then your house (which has probably risen in value) could be in the pot as well.
I doubt you could get rent . If you could maybe he would be entitled to rent from your partner .
As you are finding not taking some advice will cause problems which in turn will stop the amicable nature of your relationship.

You might just have to bite the bullet at some point and have a proper conversation about your situation.

It may be that you are both happy to remain as you are. It may help to talk about your wills and the grandchildren. To keep things on an even keel, you may be able to do this with a third party. Perhaps even Relate?
