What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

My divorce Decree Nisi is being read in court on Tuesday and I have been informed by my solicitor that there is no point in me going to court to object to paying my husbands divorce fees as he has accused me of unreasonable behavour (reasons that have been created by him) my solicitor said that this would only create further expenses for myself. Can anyone tell me if turning up to court myself (without a solicitor) to object to the costs occurs fees or does this only apply if a solicitor attends?

If my husband is awarded that I pay his divorce costs how far does this extend? Does this include his solicitor fees etc?

Thank you.

If you intend to attend the hearing, your spouse has a right of reply and may instruct his solicitor to attend which will bump up the cost by around £600 or more.

The costs order covers the court fees of £340 and £45 and the solicitors fees of dealing with the divorce - typically around 4.5 hours at whatever the hourly rate is. If you were personally served with the Petition, additional costs will have been incurred as the agent that served you will charge around £150.00.

All in all, a bill of £1500 is likely.
