What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

I just wanted to post about the Personal Support Unit , a service provided in a number of locations to assist those without legal representation.

I found out about the PSU when researching McKenzie Friends on Wikivorce. Fortunately they provide a support service at my court in Manchester - but they have recently expanded their service areas so they now have teams in London, Manchester, Liverpool, Cardiff & Birmingham.

I went to visit the team today. As they explained to me, they cannot provide legal advice nor speak to the Judge on my behalf. What they can do is provide two things I need as a LIP - moral support, so that I am not at the court on my own to face the STBX and his legal team; and a plain English translation of the court proceedings, both at the time and afterwards.

I''ve made arrangements for them to assist me at my First Appointment in December. I''ll keep this thread updated with my experiences of their service as the case progresses.
