What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

I was in a similar situation. My ex wanted me to get nothing and wanted to fight all the way regardless. He was very confident and arrogant about what he would get. It had been an abusive relationship and both of us being LiP's was a recepie for disaster. I used a barrister for all of my hearings and am glad I did. My case was complicated and my barrister sought directions which I would never have thought of obtaining to forward my case if I was going it alone.

If you can afford it and feel you need it, trust your lawyer, then yes being represented at hearings is wise.
