What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

STBX was divorce petitioner and Decree Nisi issued at a court local to his new home.

If I want to start financial order proceedings (form A) am I allowed to do so at a court local to me (and the FMH if that''s relevant).

It''s possable but you will need a decent reason to change from the court dealing with the divorce, the final decision belongs to a judge, usually the judge dealing with the divorce.

Is living > 400 miles away from the court a good enough reason? (I''m a carer too so difficult to spend too long away from home).

Would a reasonable compromise be to ask for the hearings to be midway between us so it''s a day trip for each rather than overnight stays?

How do I go about it - do I simply file Form A with the court I wish to use?
