What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Do you need help going to court over a Financial Settlement?

The court local to me is actually very good and timely, ok so its falling apart and compared to the other buildings either side looks a disgrace, but they are helpful and do try,

But

How you approach them makes all the difference, they deal with people who are upset all day long, people shout and complain, but the person you are talking too is not responsible and nor are they payed a decent wage, smile be nice be well mannered and use the golden words, thank you, this way at least you have a chance of satisfaction, i know no shame, not a bit, i have taken flowers to court for the staff i have taken pies for the bouncer (security guard), does it help, it did me.

:)

Thanks dukey: good advice.

Being nice and polite is the way forward: I''m hoping they will respond in kind as they are not that way over the phone!

I know QPR,

But think of it like this, if people are nasty with you in your job and people shout and even swear, would you be a bit defensive, you can see how it would happen.

A big smile, a hi hello how are you, it makes such a difference.

Ok so i know your going to post tomorrow to say i`m completely wrong, you went to court with flowers and pie`s and they set a 9 stone brother of Cerberus on you and now have just the one leg.

I am and will always be the eternal optimist,

You are of course right.

They will however be getting no goodies out of me until they prove their worth!

Well I went to the Court on Friday with my D11 and, whilst they were careful not to give me any legal advice (wouldn''t even 100% confirm that a D11 was the right form to use for my circumstances), they were nice and pleasant, even suggesting I write out the form three times as their photocopying charges were extortionate.

Glad I decided to go in person rather than continuing to phone and email them.

During the good times, the then government didn''t invest a dime in the court service. It was schoolsnhospitals all the way. Now we''re in the deepest recession in living memory, the present incumbents have committed to protecting guess what? Yes that''s right, schoolsnhospitals. So absolutely no hope for the business of providing justice to all without fear or favour.
