What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Do you need help going to court over a Financial Settlement?

Well its over for us at last! (I hope!)

Louise, thanks for the update, it gives me hope! And congratulations from being free from this! You can sleep at night now!

One thing: It would be great if you stuck around to help others, but I understand that once you've washed your hands of this horrible case, this might represent a 'sad' place for you to stay.... and pull you back into a negative space you don't need. I hope others' learn from the £30k warning!!! (And sort things amicably in their own cases).

Good luck

Sera

PS: If you do write that book - I'll offer to co-auther!

Congratulations Louise,

Thank you for putting the post up, especially for including the barrister's dastardly attempt to add something after signature, I never would have thought someone in that position being capable of it - a very important warning to us all!

Please do write a book on how to self-represent. It is not just that millions of pounds are being wasted in this country on unnecessary legal fees but the human factor, the heartache and the denial of those funds being used for the good of children caught up in the divorce and the things parents are forced to do to make ends meet - that is the crying shame.

God bless and good luck with your life, the both of you!

Well Done - so glad it is over for you both, glad you stuck to your guns and there was some justice in the end.
