What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Do you need help going to court over a Financial Settlement?

Our consultant service offers expert advice and support for people who are going to court over a fair financial settlement, for less than a quarter of the cost of using a traditional high street solicitor.

Brilliant!....Any idea how the public show support for this bill?...I guess putting it out on social media would be a good idea & emailing your local mp to request the bill is supported....but if you know how else it can be publicised please share.

I think one of the main issues is that the government don't support it and private bills which are introduced by members of the House of Lords don't get any priority in the timetable. The high profile case of Owens v Owens seems to have been a particular catalyst for introducing no-fault divorce. Both parties had significant wealth and the husband therefore had the resources to mount an expensive defense. Hardly a regular occurrence, whereas England's "open ended" legal approach to financial provision creates uncertainty, misery and unnecessary expense for thousands. Some good suggestions, Chevette, might also need a few examples of past cases to generate some media interest. How about a petition on something like changedotorg?

Not sure if we are allowed to post links but will give it a go:
bills.parliament.uk/bills/2564

Links like this are absolutely fine - and encouraged!

Perhaps you could start a fresh discussion thread on this Bill, and if you do decide to start a petition, let Wikivorce know (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) as it may be something that Wiki is willing to agree to the petition link being posted on the forum (usually it's not permitted, but I can't see why a well-worded petition of this nature wouldn't be).
