What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

My wife and I are discussing the idea of having 1 week on / off in our family home to look after our boys and to create some space between us (e.g. to stop arguments; give boys dedicated and even time with each parent; etc) and we are floating the idea of also renting a flat between us. The idea is that every week my wife and I swap home for flat.

Has anyone done this? Does it work? What are the practicalities of this? How do you manage it / does a legal agreement need to be made? Any risks or watch outs?

The overarching principle is we minimize disruption to the kids, bring some space and certainly to both my wife and I, whilst progressing divorce....
