What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

How can I discover if I am already divorced?

I split with my partner four and half years ago. We have lost touch, but I hear about a letter a year ago (it came a long roundabout route)and it was delivered to a friend of a friends address! I never saw the letter, but the subject was divorce proceedings.

I never answered, I am in another country now. I know longer have access to the address on the letter.

What I would like to know is if I am legally divorced? How can I find out? If so, how can I get the official papers?

Or should I just initiate a divorce myself, to be on the safe side? I have no idea where my ex-partner is now nor do we share mutual acquaintances.

Any help would be appreciated.

By the way, its largely irrelevant now, But I walked after three years of torment and physical and mental abuse... the night she tried to stab me for some imagined slight... I came to my senses and never went back.

She was a beautiful indonesian girl that turned out to be a prolific liar, thief, cheat and prostitute. I loved her and gave her everything, but underneath the surface her character and behaviour never changed one iota.

I am happy and healthy again... and I couldn't face talking to her or seeing her.

So, am I divorced yet? :)Please give me good news!
