What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

We had a holiday booked for 5 days after i discovered his disgusting texts and emails. The kids were expecting a trip on a plane and I didn''t want to let them down. He decided he''d have the one we''d booked with someone else and I''d book something last minute for me and the kids and he''d give me £400. He didn''t. When I got back I had debt on my credit card. But I''d had a great week with the kids. So I flogged my wedding and engagement ring to pay that off. No regrets at all.

Some interesting and sad stories :)

As I didnt want to be reminded of Stbx, I thought I would definitely want to get rid of rings. The only thing is, I do luv my engagement ring, but would not wear it for the above reasons.

Someone mentioned to me that you can get the stones reset, dont know if this would cost a lot or is worthwhile. But I might enquire.

A holiday sounds the next best thing and I need one drastically with all the stress. (Im sure you all do!)

Thanks for you interesting replies. :)

A friend of mine found an independent jeweller and had both wedding and engagement ring melted down and made into a new ring, with the diamonds set into it. It is absolutely lovely, but I think it cost a bit.

The journalist Kate Flett went off on some sort of wildlife trecking thing and had them made into a bullet then shot into a tree by the treck leader. Probably also expensive but very satisfying, and she had the holiday too.

My mother sold her wedding ring when she was short of cash but gave me her engagement ring a few years ago and I wear it a lot.

I''m having mine made into something else, not sure what yet.

Sigh. I have, more times than I can remember, considered cashing my rings in...not quite brought myself to do it but recognise there''s not much point in having them just sit in a jewellery box for the rest of my life. No girls to pass them on to - and whilst I understand why people have done this, it feels a bit....oh I don''t know, doomed, a bad omen, cursed?!

One day I''ll need to pay a large bill and that will sort it,I guess!

I doubt my wedding ring will be worth that much. I think its only 9Crt gold, but I do like the ring. It has Elvish script on it from Lord Of The Rings. But as many have said, its a reminder of the STBX and what she has done. I think I will most likely just cash it in for the minimal value it holds.

Seems a shame realy but got to look to the future not the past
