What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

I didn''t know where to put this.

My name is Taryn and I am currently 21 years old. I married a man on September 2nd 2010 who is an American citizen. We were married in his county of birth, Saginaw MI and were together six months before consequently separating, after he abused me over the period of time I lived with him. This abuse was sexual. I am debating whether to return back to Wales or not and want to really know, if I return to the UK, would I be able to divorce him if we are in two separate countries or is there another way to be free of him? I don''t wish to remain married, and I wish to put this whole farce behind me. I''ve been through hell and back and I really just want to end it all.

USA varies state to state so I would review Michigan state law. You may have to be married for a certain period before divorcing.
