What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Am working now on the best way to go about a financial settlement and it has been suggested that I go through all my income and expenditure over the last 20 years!!! Does anyone have or know of a template that I could use???

It''s important to separate the hurt and emotion from the practicalities otherwise the divorce will be far more complicated and therefore expensive than it needs to be.

Who petitions for divorce really doesn''t matter and defending or cross-petitioning just wastes energy, time and money which could be better spent on sorting out the finances. Contrary to what many people think conduct very rarely affects the financial settlement.

The usual legal advice is not to move out of the former matrimonial home but once you have moved out it is no longer your home and it can be difficult moving back.
