What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Finally gets her divorce papers through?

This is random but could someone please tell me what the following statement means:

"Jack is thrilled when his girlfriend finally gets her divorce papers through?"

Does that mean his girlfriend is officially divorced or that''s just the start of the divorce proceedings and there will be signing etc?

Thanks:)

It is random, especially for a first post :)

I would agree with LB, and would just ask this - was jack''s girlfriend being divorced on the basis of her adultery with Jack? ;)

The other way round I believe.:PJack''s girlfriend filed for divorce because her husband had been having an affair, he left her for the woman he had been having an affair with and then she got together with Jack. She was granted a residence order for her ex husband''s daughter as well.

He said he wouldn''t give her a divorce at first but does the statement "Jack is thrilled when his girlfriend finally gets her divorce papers through"mean that she''s officially divorced?

Depends on what those papers are, without knowing exactly it''s impossible to say. They could be the divorce decree, or they could be the Petition.

Why do you ask? (I''m curious)
