Hi,
You need to think carefully how to present the truth, thats not so say lie, just avoid blame. Try not to deliver it as a speach but give them time to ask questions, and they will probably have plenty of those. Try to think through what they are in advance. Dealing with the anxiety is very difficult but once someone mentions the elephant in the room it does get easier.
The chances are that they will be very upset but reassure them that you are both going to continue to be part of their lives.
