What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Hi my name is Jon and I''m recently separated from my wife.

We were together 12 yrs, married 5, no kids (moot point) and I work for her father (awkward).

I am now in a very vulnerable position as my wife is I insistant that I leave work as I have to cooperate closely with her (though she has a silent role in the firm). We both have taken on aspects of her mothers role, running the financial side of the business. Her mother (whom I was very close to) passed away in January.

I am now living with my brother, his heavily pregnant wife, their child and cat in a two bedroom cottage, and with me the dog. I will be needing to find myself some living accommodation pretty soon, but finances are tight as I''m still paying half the bills at home.

Any constructive advice anyone can offer would be a great help.

There is a saying never work with family, not that it helps you, what does your father in law think, chances are his daughter will get her own way at some point.

Do you have much in the way of assets to share?.
