What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

I''m now divorced and have reverted back to my Maiden Name. Is it still possible to obtain a copy of my marriage certificate? I need it for evidence of both names.

Hi,

If its just for evidence of your married name would your Decree Absolute not be enough? You can get a copy of your marriage certificate either by going to the registrar office or on-line, there is a charge. Hope that helps.

Thanks but my decree Absolute only shows my married name. The passport office want to see a document showing evidence of both names. Can you still get a copy of the marriage certificate even though it was surrendered to court during divorce?

Do you not have a birth certificate? Or do you need one document with both names on it? (I might be in this situation soon - haven''t yet decided on what to do about my surname)

According to the passport office they need evidence of both names. (Strange because the Benefits Agency, Inland Revenue, NHS, banks and Work were happy to change with just my Decree Absolute.) I don''t understand because they have a record of my maiden name on record from my old passport application. I have my birth certificate.
I think this is really unfair treatment of mainly women who take on their spouse''s surname. So it looks as if I''ve got to shell out for a copy of my marriage certificate now

When I got my passport I just used my birth certificate and they didnt ask for anything else but that was 10 years ago so they must have tightened up the regulations.
