Its perhaps not obvious why the changes were made so I will try and explain the rationale behind them.
The old menu was fine for experienced members accessing the site on a PC. You could select and get straight to the page you wanted (if you new which submenu it was on) in one click.
However for new users it was a rather overwhelming. There were so many menu options (around 50) which meant that the key resources (such as the DIY divorce guide) were lost amongst the links to photos, groups and chat rooms.
Also the old menu was very difficult to use from a smart phone. The buttons were too small for stubby fingers and the dynamic drop down feature just didn''t really work from mobile devices.
The "services" and "magazine" sections of the site had a different look and feel, and used a different menu before the changes. Now all three elements of the site (community/services/magazine) all sit under the same consistent top of screen menu.
The left hand menus (forum menu, guides menu, services menu) were previously in a range of styles with different colours and different icon sets. Now they are all consistent.
We are aware that it takes 2 clicks now rather than one to get to the Forum. And also that the "Forum" is not a top level menu button - as it sits below "Advice". We are mulling over whether to change that.
Could I just add that it would be more useful in the top right hand corner to have ''View Profile'' there rather than ''Update Profile''. We rarely need to update our profile but often need to view quickly to access friends, inbox etc.
