What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

High legal fees no deterrent to divorce

A survey of over 2,000 people has revealed that thought of paying high legal fees is not preventing them from getting divorced. The survey, carried out by online pollsters, One Poll, on behalf of Seddons solicitors, asked the question "Does the thought of high legal fees prevent you from having/considering a divorce?" and 76% of respondents said no.

Another interesting finding is that while most people seem to claim that their own relationships are relatively stable they do not think that other people's relationships work so well. When asked the question "Do you think lots of people are trapped in a marriage wishing to get out?", 82% of respondents said yes.

Seddons had commissioned the survey to find out about the public's awareness of mediation as means of settling relationship problems.
