What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

You should tell your Solicitor all about these assets and get the Solicitor to ask questions about the source and destination of these missing funds. 50% of them are yours along with 1.5 cars!

Grr.... There is no law in England & Wales splitting assets 50:50 or at least it is an over simplification of the law.

Vivi36 is spot on. You (or a solicitor on your behalf) goes through bank statements and credit cards etc and look for money being transferred into unknown accounts, credit cards being paid from an undisclosed source etc to identify any inconsistencies. IF you do this yourself and highlight the discrepancies to a solicitor it should cut the amount of work of the solicitor does and therefore your legal bill.
