What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

You should see the case ruled in Ireland last year, that made the papers this Sunday - wife came back after 16 years:
www.thepost.ie/post/pages/p/story.aspx-q...qid=26685-qqqx=1.asp
At 63 years of age she got pension 1.25M, cash 400K, 10% of company shares (300K), SM of 90K. He is wealty and can probably afford it, but most of his assets are in the family business and at 64 - his wife just got awarded 50% of his pension. So beware - get FH and closure asap.

Yes, get closure through FH if at all possible, but of course if there is any element of spouse maintenance(*) in there the recipient always has the right to come back and ask for a variation... drat!

* = I refuse to add the redundant "al" on the end. When was the last time you used a house-al painter, or a car-al mechanic? It's a one-man battle I'm fighting against the death of common sense in English. I know I'll lose by and by, but WTH?
