Hi all, my wife told me she wanted divorce 7 weeks ago, I received the petition 3 weeks ago and accepted it(Unreasonable behaviour)but she is steadfastly refusing to talk to me about a financial settlement or where we go from here. Instead she says she will only discuss it in mediation. I have even said why don’t we both write down what we consider a fair settlement and go from there. But she will not engage at all.
its a 10 year marriage, no children. when equity in property and pensions are added up there’s over £1million at stake, I had all the assets when we met so I potentially stand to lose out the most.
we are still living together in the marital home, I have always done all the maintenance, repairs etc on the house. Sooner to later I guess she will approach me about going to mediation. I am now minded to tell her to go through her solicitors to arrange anything with me as she has refused to engage with me. also if the house needs any repairs etc. to tell her to sort it out and that I won’t lift a finger to help. (I have recently carried out an extension on the house doing lots of work myself, my wife did none, this has vastly improved the value of the property). one solicitor advised me to not even wait for mediation, just write her a letter with a financial settlement offer.
Am I being petty? I feel that she is the one not communicating with me on our future so why should I be amenable to her.
