What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

My husband works overseas, but says he will get a job in the UK in January, where his salary will be about a quarter of what it is now.

Will the court take this into consideration with regard to financial issues? I don't work, and have two small children, aged 5 & 7. (We are only at Petition stage).

Maintenance can be a set amount or it can be on a percentage basis.

So if he earns £20,000 one year and is on a 20% basis he will pay you £4,000 a year and so on.
