What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Do you need help sorting out a fair financial settlement?

Our consultant service offers expert advice and support to help you reach agreement on a fair financial settlement quickly, and for less than a quarter of the cost of using a traditional high street solicitor.

I have had help from the PSU, in fact the appeals office in RCJ called them to assist me when I broke down in tears there a few years back.

They are a great support but they cannot help you with legal arguments or documents and they do not give legal advice (just backing up LLM hear).

You can however get legal advice from the PRFD in High Holborn from the citizens advice office and the pro bono solicitors that give their time to the general public (been there also).

They do not have much time so you need to get your papers in order and your questions ready for the appointment (there will be other pro bono citizens advice units no doubt across the country).

I think my appointment was just 10 minutes - hard to get things down and across in that time. usually appointments are available in about 2 weeks but I expect if varies from district to district.

Don''t forget that you can always take a trusted friend to court as a MacKenzie Friend (I prefer the term moral counsel).

Courts vary across the UK some allow Macs without an application and some need an application - a D11 with a short CV of the Mac confirming who they are and that there is no personal or financial conflict of interest that would prevent them attending court with you.

Just to add a little experience to LLM''s expertise in that the person who helped me from the PSU had no legal training but was a retired teacher with an interest in helping the general public and those involved in civil proceedings.

At the end of the couple of hours she spent with me I wanted to give her a tip or a hug or something but just had to thank her profusely for all the moral support she gave me during a very grueling few hours finding my way around the maze of offices in the RCJ.

For those interested the RCJ is open to the general public and is an amazingly complex place full of history, works of art and it has an amazing atmosphere (often shown on the tele the impressive old arch and stonework on the Strand).

You can also go in there and talk to reception about the civil cases that are being held that day (most of which are open court).

It is worth going and seeing civil process in action for anyone either interested generally or considering a career in law or who might be facing the proposition of a contentious civil proceeding during financial remedy in divorce (those things being separate entities in law).

I visited the Manchester PSU yesterday, and have arranged for them to accompany to my court hearings for moral support (so that I''m not on my own). I''m fine with the paperwork required, I''m just scared of running into the STBX on my own when I know he''ll have support.
