What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Would appreciate some advice please on how the court would view division of assets in the following circumstance. Adult son, currently at university has a serious medical condition, but not diagnosed with certainty. Son lives with husband in the marital home. Wife lives in rented house with 11 years old. A financial remedy is sought between the couple - is the court likely to take account of the adult sons condition and future needs with regard to split of assets please? with thanks.

Potentially yes, depending on prognosis and care needed. It would be a factor that cannot be ignored in any settlement.
