What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Do you need help sorting out a fair financial settlement?

Our consultant service offers expert advice and support to help you reach agreement on a fair financial settlement quickly, and for less than a quarter of the cost of using a traditional high street solicitor.

Hi all, dont know if anyone can give me some advice, separated from my husband recently (his choice),i found rented accomodation for me and my girls and used most of the money he gave me(half the equity of the house,he stayed there)to put 6 months rent on a house for us,i let my local benifits office know straightaway that i would need to claim for single oarent benifits until i could find both a job and childcare, its been nearly a month and i still havent received the forms to apply for it,ive rang them up as my only income now is child benifit of £35 a week and things are getting deperate, they told me theres a back log of cases asnd their short staffed so i just have to wait, and all ive had so far is a council tax bill for the full amount.Child maintanance is going through the csa and so not sorted out either,im under a huge amount of pressure as this all happened so quickly im still shellshocked by whats happened and not coping very well(although i can hide it in front of the kids),dont know what to do can anyone advise me,thanks all.

You can claim for most benefits online - this link is for Income Support - www.dwp.gov.uk/eservice/

You need to claim sooner rather than later, as benefits will only start from your claim date, they wont be backdated.

You can also go to your local Jobcentre Plus for advice and application help.
