Historical Repayment of Legal Aid was created by mshepard
I was divorced in 1986/87 and a charge was put on my property. In the early 1990''s I changed my morgage provider to enable me to borrow £2000.00 to pay off my legal aid.
The Soliciter could not find a charge on my property via the Land registry. Therefore i was unable to pay it. I am 67years old finished full time work and put in for solar panels on the roof. Suddenly the Land registry have sent me a bill for £4666.00 wish went up a fornight later on the second letter to £4673.00. I rang them and asked why had I recieved a bill after all this time.trying to find out who to pay and how much. they said they had been in touch in 2003. Ive asked for proof of this letter, they stated that the bill then was £1717.00.
What can I do? in these circumstances. I have wanted this bill cleared for so long but why should I have to pay the amount there asking. Because They have just been so lacks in sending out a bill.

Do you have the proof still that your solicitor was unable to find the charge? It could help you argue your case?

I have just googled the solicitor the company is still there.
So I was cheeky and asked the questions Ineeded to. hopefully they have a little detective there that would like to solve the mystery, and go to the archives for me. I will let you know.::lol:

I would be surprised if the solicitor still had records - they''re usually disposed of after 6-10 years.

In relation to the charge on the property, you should find out when this was registered and request details of the application to register the charge. The Land Registry should be able to furnish you with these details although you may have to pay for a copy of the documents which is anywhere from £3-£20. It''s unfair but it is probably the quickest way of getting to the bottom of the issue.
