What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

My husband and I separated 6 months ago and until now the only money he has paid is the rent on our home. I am having to claim benefits which amount to £680 a month. He earns £3,000 a month after tax and is refusing to give me any more. Can anyone tell me if I'll be entitled to more if I divorce him and ask for child support and alimony.

mejulie,
Welcome to Wikivorce. Hopefully you will find answers to most of your questions here from many that have been there before you.

Your specific question today - Need a bit more info to answer.

How long were you married?
How many children and how old?
If any children over 18 and in full time education?
Are you in England/Wales or Scotland?

Post up some answers and someone will give you an idea

Hi, thanks for the welcome.

We were married 17 years and have 2 children aged 12 and 13.
We live in England.

Julie,
With 2 children of that age, he should be paying you 20% of his nett income as child maintenance: £600 pm

Have you applied for housing benefit?
Do you work at all? Are you able to work?
Are you claiming everything you are entitled to?

Depending on your answers, he may also need to pay some spousal maintenance to you to support your needs.

Mike
