What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

I started my pension contributions 10 years before I was married. Am I able to claim these as pre-marital assets?

We have agreed to split everything 50/50, including the pension pot, and have been married for 24 years.

It may be difficult to calculate the % of the pot that these contributions make up as they will have been much less at the beginning of my career but was just wondering.

In short no, after a marriage lasting that long all assets are joint.
