What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

This hits home - my partner and I bought a flat together when he left his wife and I insisted we buy it as joint tenant, despite all the equity coming from the sale of my house; I wanted to reassure him this was a long term commitment between us and that I didn't want him just for his money.

We were going to pay off the mortgage with his money when his house sold. It belonged to him before marriage, his wife made no regular contributions to it while they were together, refused even to get a job to help contribute to household expenses, but she refuses to agree to let him sell it and wants him to give it to her! AND she now says her solicitor says she can make a claim on his half of our property.

Very depressing.

don't know if you know about the BSWC? It's a web site for 2nd wives/girlfriends. My girlfriend seems to think you would feel alot better if you were to take a look at it. She's a member and has made a lot of friends on there in the same situation as you and her. She asys it's nice to know that all those thoughts you have about the ex wife are not alien. Take a look and see what you think. It's helped our relationship because she doesn't get so down about stuff and theres lots of practical advice too.

let us know how it goes.
