What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

I am currently in the process of giving my ex husband a lump sum of money for him to transfer the house solely in my name. I am wondering once it is signed and finalised am I entitled to sell it or rent it, as I want to get away from the village and move on with my life.

Once you are the sole and outright owner of a property then you can do with it as you wish, unless there is a clause in your Consent Order stating you may not sell or rent for a certain period of time after the transfer, in which case you would need to sit out that time period before renting or selling.
