What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

I am in the process of going through a divorce and since separating a year ago, I met my current partner. We want to buy a home together but not sure if she puts a deposit down on a house will it become something that could affect the financial settlement?

I would suggest you get the divorce and financial settlement out of the way first ..

If you are unmarried and buy a place together, you can have a deed of trust drawn up which would divide the property according to contribution .. Your ex would not have a claim on your new partner''s share and it would protect you both in the event of a relationship breakdown.

You need to talk to a solicitor.
