What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Just received stbx sols letter where it states (and wanting my agreement to) that after 25 years together the value of my jewellery comes to the total value of £1000. Engagement ring cost £500 back in 1987. Yeah I was really high maintenance me.....haha

Guess you better go check your house insurance policy to make sure you have it listed!!!!
Obviously the sentimental value to you is what makes it worth so much. You could always take it to a jeweller and ask them to cut it in half so he can have his share.....
or get a valuation on it for free. The ridiculous thing about these things is the solicitor bills end up so high. There really is no end to it it all sometimes

I guess it depends on whether it is what you would sell it for .. or what it may cost to buy a replacement.

My engagement ring cost around £300 in 1989. I lost it and had to have a new one made .. that cost the insurance about 1200. Now whether it is actually worth that is another matter.

Still, if you don''t want it any more I guess you could trade it off with him. He may find it looks very fetching...:P

Say you were so upset about his behaviour that you threw it in the Basingstoke (or your local) canal.

What''s he gonna do then?

That''s a rhetorical question by the way, there is nothing he could do!
