What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

Please can anyone advise me about transfer of names on deeds for land. My stbx is having FMH, and paying for the transfer into his sole name. I am having a plot of land which we own, and I pay for the transfer into my sole name. My existing solicitor has advised me of the cost of transfer, but I am considering doing this on my own and trying to save costs. I have read up on the process and contacted the Land Registry for information. I am currently on legal aid. What would your advice be? any help and advise greatly appreciated.

Sorry, but do you know how to do it ?

I spent some time at university learning how to do it ( in fairness, the process was much more complicated then than it is now ).

It''s like asking me, could I fit a new set of brake pads on my car ? Do I have to use a mechanic ?

The answer of course is no, and there are some people who could do it themselves. But I can''t, so I use a mechanic.

One piece of advice which I can offer is to conclude both transactions at the same time.

Thank you so much for your advice. When I spoke to the Land Registry they said it was relatively easy. They have emailed me the forms and the info sheet on how to fill them out. I was just trying to save some money as my solicitors bill is expensive enough. I am quite able (usually) to complete forms, the only stumbling block I can see is that I need to get my stbx to sign the transfer form. I assume I can forwrd this to his solicitor to ask him to do, explaining that I am (if I do) completing this transfer without the aid of my solicitor. Thank you so much for your help.

If I were to use a solicitor to transfer names on deeds, is it advisable to use my current solicitor, who is expensive for this service. Or is it ok to ''shop'' around for one with a better price? Thank you.
