What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

My wife and I are going through a divorce. In terms of dividing up furniture, cars etc. are we entitled to 50% each, independent of our incomes? I assumed so but have just learnt that our financial assets will be split 60:40 in her favour so wondered if the same might apply to property.

Thanks, M

There''s no straight answer to this. Depending on various factors, the settlement could range between 50:50 to 70:30. Have you had any legal advice on this yet? You say you''ve just learned - who told you?

When I used wikivorce''s Divorce Calculator it split our financial assets 60/40 in favour of my wife, something she had suggested would be the case. My income is about £60k and hers about £25k - does that explain it? Would the same split apply to property?

Thanks for your help.

Probably. It''s the disparity in income which does it.
