What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

In Blah's post on mediation, sessions are costing £250 an hour - is this the average?
Who are these mediators ?
Who trains them and who regulates them - do they operate out of solicitors' practices? Are they employed by solicitors?

Maggie,
In Lancaster it cost us £65 per hour each.

Our mediator was a local solicitor.

I believe that there is a professional body like College of mediators. Don't know if they are REQUIRED to be professionally trained or regulated.

Thanks Mike - I was shocked at that hourly rate - looks like another nice little earner for the divorce industry.
