What are we each entitled to in our divorce settlement?

What does the law say about how to split the house, how to share pensions and other assets, and how much maintenance is payable.

What steps can we take to reach a fair agreement?

The four basic steps to reaching an agreement on divorce finances are: disclosure, getting advice, negotiating and implementing a Consent Order.

What is a Consent Order and why do we need one?

A Consent Order is a legally binding document that finalises a divorcing couple's agreement on property, pensions and other assets.

When both parties agree to mediation - do the parties get billed 50/50 (cost per party) or is it charged per session - in which case can the parties need to agree to split the costs?

Hey Scorchio,

Thanks

So you and your stbx had different costings for the session?

ie - you £204.00
stbx - £X.xx

Or was that the session cost in total which you agreed to pay?

Hope the session went well for you!!

HI,

It was my first meeting. ex will get a letter informing her of appointment. If she goes is another matter.
First appointment was free.

Costs are based on earnings,

under £20000- £132
£20000-£25000 £150
£25000-£30000 £204
£30000-£50000 £240
£50000-£80000 £240
£80000 + £300

Per Session
Not sure if I have to pay her session or we both go in the room at the same time.

Most mediation services charge per session. Many (but not all) will charge according to your income range so charge separately.

It's worth knowing that some services do legal aid and mediation can be free if you qualify.

I know couples who've agreed to share the fees even tho one's been free. Even the parent who's more keen to use mediation sometimes offers to pay for both (still cheaper than a solicitor!).
