Did you make a payment when you instructed your solicitor, maybe that's what it could be.

It is as Marty says. Any payment you make to your solicitor is either for your legal fees or as a payment in settlement that is passed to the other party (or a payment to reflect both types).

If you pay £300 to your solicitor and they send you a bill for £1000 it might look like this:

£1000 bill total
£300 less payment on account
£700 amount now due
