Www.entitledto.org has a benefits calculator, which you can play around with for different "what if" scenarios.
If you move out, it is possible for her to get help towards the mortgage. It takes approx. 3 - 6 months before it is paid, and it is paid on the assumption that she is liable for 50% of the mortgage payment, and covers interest only, not capital repayments. I believe it has the same eligibility criteria as housing benefit, only difference is that you have to wait longer for the payments to kick in. As an example, on my repayment mortgage of £800 a month, I get £200 paid which is half of the interest part.
Have you considered Changing the mortgage to interest only, to reduce the payments?
It''s all still very amicable so we''re open to all suggestions. I do feel slightly offended at the comment previously which seems to suggest I''m kicking her out. I never intended it to sound like that and we are both trying to find the best solution that we can financially afford. Beyond that there is no ''we''. My wife wanted us to separate and (eventually!) I agreed with her decision and that no one is to blame. It''s now what''s best for the children, and after that me and the children.
Sounds like I''m healing slowly, eh? Still hurts like hell though most mornings!
In the last couple of days it looks like we''ve decided staying in the house until it sells would be the best idea, but things keep changing so I''ll bear the mortgage idea in mind as a next-best option. Thanks for the comments.
