Am I right in thinking that the judge can't allocate any assets to either party at a directions hearing? Eg if one party has an asset the other wants, that can't be sorted through directions - it would have to be part of the final settlement?

Yes, that's correct. The Directions hearing (the FDA) is more of an administrative hearing to look at what information has been disclosed, what is still to be disclosed, decide which of the questions in the questionnaire should be answered, if professional valuations are required, and so on. It's not a hearing for arguing your case or for decisions to be made about the eventual settlement.
