Fee to use the new child support service dropped to £20

The Government had proposed charging parents up to £100 to use the new child maintenance service, claiming it would stop parents in conflict using it as a ‘weapon’ in maintenance negotiations. But after many parents expressed serious concern in finding the £100 application fee, the Government has cut the fee five-fold, from £100 to just £20. The service will remain totally free for victims of domestic violence.

The Coalition Government claims it is introducing the fee in a bid to get parents to ‘consider collaborating’ and work out maintenance agreements without resorting to court or the CSA. They have also announced a new £20m package of support for parents who separate which is likely to include increased counselling services and online tools to help people make their own arrangements.
