hi

cant seem to find much information on this, but would be good if someone could point me in the right direction.

me and wife got married in japan.
shes japanese, and i am uk.
she has changed her residency to being a uk citizen.
we have never registered the marriage in the uk.

having read here -> www.crnjapan.com/divorce/en/types_of_divorce_in_japan.html

that one of us needs to be a japanese resident, i wonder is this true.

Q: What are the residency requirements for filing?

A: At least one of the parties must be a legal resident of Japan. The court will not accept cases from couples who have traveled to Japan for the sole purpose of obtaining a divorce.

even if she is a japanese national.

can anyone give me any advice, would it be easier to register the marriage in the uk and pursue a divorce here?

Snowy,

I can't comment on the legal aspects, but from my limited experience of the cultural differences between here and Japan, I would recommend trying to arrange proceedings here in the UK. At least you have some chance of being able to follow the legal process.

Last night, a corporate lawyer friend of mine recounted a meeting with his opposite in Tokyo. 3 hours down, no straight answers to even the simplest question!

I have a huge admiration for the Japanese culture and their professionalism in my sphere of work, but I suspect in your difficult situation a home match will be easier.

And you've found the evidence that says you can't get divorced in Japan - so it must be in the UK.

best wishes
