Prostate Cancer awareness campaign

This week sees the launch of the Stand By Your Man campaign, aiming to highlight and increase awareness of Prostate Cancer, and is asking people to pledge to talk to the men in their lives about how prostate cancer can be identified.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men

It is estimated that by 2030 it will be the most common cancer

One man dies from prostate cancer every 49 minutes - more than 10,000 every year

More than 40,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year

One in eight men will get prostate cancer
More than a quarter of a million men are living with and after prostate cancer

In the UK, black African and black Caribbean men are three times more likely to develop prostate cancer than white men of the same age.

Prostate cancer mainly affects men over the age of 50 and the risk increases with age

My neighbour complained one morning about getting up in the night was disturbing his sleep, he denied any other symptoms. After some persuasion and a bit of bribery (home made cakes),I took him to his GP.

That was 5 years ago, he was 70 yrs old and diagnosed with prostate cancer. He underwent a radical prostatectomy and remains cancer free.

This man has no family near, suffers from moderate dementia and needs help/reminders for his medication/check-up''s. He also has two son''s, both of which now have yearly PSI (blood test for prostate hormone levels) normal being below 4. There is a genetic component with prostate cancer so it is important his son''s have this screening even if below the age of 50.

I agree with Ruby about the importance of raised awareness, my reason for this post is to demonstrate we can all help.
