I have my 1st appointment with mediation next week and my xtb has said that he will give me £200 pm maintenance.

We have been married 7 years and have 2 children 6 & 3.

He is self-employed and has said that he does not need to pay much.

Does this sound reasonable? Will mediation advise or are they just there to keep the peace and stop the meetings getting side tracked...

Thanks.

Unfortunately, the answer to this question depends on a number of factors about which you have given us little information.

Is the figure you have quoted of £200 per month inclusive of child support ?

Child support is a statutory obligation and the amount is more or less fixed ; you will find a calculator on the CSA website.

The question then is whether he can afford to pay any more, on top of the child support.

It would definitely pay you to have a benefits check from a CAB, to determine what benefits you may be entitled to now that you are or soon will be, living apart.
