Sometimes courts will award SR to equalise the power between parents but it''s an uphill struggle changing a sole residence order unless there is evidence from independent professionals (e.g. teachers, doctors, social workers) that children aren''t surviving satisfactorily.

Practically SR isn''t that different from sole residence/contact. Children aren''t usually as concerned about labels as parents. One way round the problem is just to refer to "staying" with one parent or the other.
