Can anybody advise, my x a policeman can retire in a few months, but will get more pension lump sum if he stays another 18 months. I think he may retire in a few months so he will get less income so he does not have to pay me so much.

Is there anything I can do to stop him doing this, until the finances are sorted.

You cannot make a person work against their will. If his actions are through spite the court has the power to make adjustments to ensure that only he suffers.
